What does it mean for a product to be authentically Irish? At first glance, the answer might seem simple; Made in Ireland, Irish materials, Irish symbols, Irish traditions. But when we look more closely, the question becomes far more interesting. Not every product featuring a shamrock is authentically Irish and not every authentically Irish product looks traditionally Irish. At My True Ireland, we believe authenticity is not defined by a single symbol, style, or formula. It is defined by connection.
More Than Symbols Ireland has many recognisable symbols; Shamrocks, Celtic knots, Harp motifs, Claddagh rings. These symbols have an important place within Irish culture and heritage; however, symbols alone do not create authenticity. A product is not automatically meaningful simply because it displays an Irish image. Authenticity runs deeper than appearance. It is found in the story behind the work, the people who create it, and the connection it has to Ireland itself.
Made in Ireland. For us, the starting point is simple. Every product featured on My True Ireland is made in Ireland. This is non-negotiable. We exist to celebrate and support makers creating work within Ireland, but being made in Ireland is only the beginning. What interests us most is the connection behind the work.
Connection to Place. Some products carry a strong connection to Ireland through the landscapes, communities, and environments that inspire them; a painting inspired by the Atlantic coastline, a textile influenced by the colours of the countryside, a piece of jewellery reflecting the shapes and textures found along Ireland's shores. These products help tell the story of a place.
Connection to Materials. Sometimes authenticity is found in the materials themselves; Irish wool, Irish seaweed, Irish wood, Irish stone, Irish clay. These materials bring a direct connection to Ireland into the work. They allow makers to incorporate elements of the landscape into the pieces they create.
Connection to Tradition. Ireland has a rich tradition of craftsmanship. Many contemporary makers continue to draw inspiration from traditional skills and techniques; Weaving, Woodworking, Pottery, Textile arts, Heritage crafts. Authenticity can often be found in the preservation and evolution of these traditions.
Connection to Story. Perhaps the most powerful form of authenticity is story. Every place has stories. Every community has stories. Every maker has stories. A product becomes meaningful when it reflects something real about the people, places, experiences, and traditions that inspired it. Stories create connection and connection creates meaning.
A Contemporary Ireland. Authenticity does not require looking backwards. Ireland is not frozen in time. It is a living, evolving country shaped by both tradition and innovation. Many contemporary Irish makers create work that feels modern while remaining deeply connected to Ireland. Some work with traditional materials in new ways. Others draw inspiration from the landscapes, culture, and experiences that surround them. Authenticity is not about preserving a stereotype. It is about expressing something genuine.
The Question We Return To. When evaluating a product, we often come back to a simple question: Could this have come from anywhere or does it reflect something uniquely connected to Ireland? The answer is not always obvious and that is what makes the question so interesting. At My True Ireland, we are particularly drawn to work that could only have come from Ireland. Not because it follows a particular style or because it uses familiar symbols, but because it carries a genuine connection to the people, places, materials, traditions, and stories that make Ireland unique. Authenticity, ultimately, is not about what something looks like. It is about what it represents and its connections. It is that connection that transforms an object into something worth keeping.
